No matter the occasion having a blast with your friends can be even better when done outside. Whilst the elements can be quite a party breaker in this circumstance, a pop up canopy can be the perfect solution for it unless there is a hail storm or something of similar proportions. This easy to set ( and portable solution can provide a shade from the sun, protection form the rain and wind and keep prying eyes away. Unlike other solutions such as fixed gazebo there is no need of extra tools when installing it and you can change its position when you feel like it. But, in order to find the right outdoor pop up canopy for your needs, you'll need to take a look into some of its features. The cover or rather the material it's made of is one of the most important aspects of a pop up canopy. I am not saying you should always get the most rigid and bulkiest cover. Instead, you should consider the weather conditions in your area and search for pop up canopies with covers that provide protection from those factors. Some have UV protection which does not only provide protection from the sun's rays but also makes the canopy itself more durable. Polyester and nylon covers are usually the ones that provide that sort of protection. Nylon is a durable fabric and also an affordable one whilst being inherently waterproof too. Covers with a thin plastic-like coating on the inside provide the best protection from rain. If a cover has soft untreated fabric on both sides it's not going to be waterproof. Vinyl covers provide protection form the sun, are usually fire and waterproof too but they are quite heavy. For the thickness and durability of a cover you'll want to look for the denier of the fabric. The higher the denier of the fabric the thicker it is but also the heavier which can be an issue if you are going to be using an aluminium frame (more about that in a bit). Aim for a light fabric that can also withstand light rain and the usual breeze. A good example of this is polyethylene as it provides excellent protection from the wind and rain whilst being very light. To provide good support for that cover you'll need a frame made of a sturdy material. Steel is the go to option when you want a sturdy canopy, but remember steel isn't a good choice when it comes to portability as it is a heavy material. Aluminium frames are easy to handle since they are a lot lighter than steel but they won't be able to hold up against strong winds and they are also prone to bending. This is why you shouldn't hang anything from aluminium frames and they should not be treated as rough as a frame made of steel. Alongside being durable and strong, you can get a steel frame that has been treated against corrosion which proper care it will last you for decades. If you want to have a more portable solution that will still last you a long time go with aluminium frames as they are rust resistant too. Pop up canopies with sealed seams are going to be tougher and also advertised as waterproof which is the case if the seams are heat sealed with quality tape. Stitched seams lack this feature and are usually on the cheaper side too. It doesn't mean that seams that are not sealed aren't waterproof - it could be that the fabric itself is waterproof. There is a difference between a waterproof and a weatherproof pop up canopy. The former means that water is the only thing that can't get through the cover and the latter means that the canopy can protect you from various weather conditions. You can always make a fabric waterproof but not weatherproof, by spraying it with a water repellent chemical. But, this won't make for a long-lasting solution especially if you'll have the canopy exposed to the sun most of the time. In case you want to have some privacy or have the option to shelter yourself from a light drizzle you'll want to consider getting a canopy with side walls too. They can also provide shelter during strong gusts of wind and torrential rains. With side walls you can keep insects and bugs from entering the canopy too. Whilst the size of the canopy will depend on the number of people you'll have on your gatherings, the size when you fold it will depend on whether or not you'll have to drive to your preferred destination and storage space. The more people you want to be able to fit under the canopy the bigger it'll be and thus the heavier, since the cover will be bigger too and the frame supporting it.
